Sunday Readings at a GlanceMs. Emily Hayes, Lector Coordinator
To proclaim the Word of God is one of the truly gratifying ministries. Our Lectors proclaim the Living Word of God to the liturgical assembly at our daily and Sunday Masses. In and through these dedicated ministers, God speaks to the parish Faithful.
In early Christian times, the reader really an important part of the Liturgy because it was still rare for the common person to be able to read and write. So, the Word of God had to be read to them by someone who could!
In the Roman Catholic Church, the reader was called a "Lector," (from the Latin word "to read"), meaning someone who, in a particular Liturgy like the Mass, was assigned to read a Biblical selection to those gathered. While lay people read the First Readings (selections from one of the Epistles or Old Testament texts), the honor of reading the Gospel is reserved for the deacon or the priest if no deacon is available.
Today, Lectors are "instituted" or, in some cases, "ordained," to read; they receive a special blessing to bring the grace necessary to properly proclaim the Word of God. So, a Lector is a special ministry, and one is considered a Lector even when not assigned to read in a specific liturgy!
